Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists by Mikki Kendall and A. D’amico
A graphic novel full of stories of women fighting for their rights. Beginning in a futuristic classroom, travel along with the befuddled students to renditions of important historical scenes that demonstrate women’s rights (and lack thereof) over the course of human history. Beautifully illustrated, the book ends with shout-outs to current activists such as Malala Yousafzai, and a call-to-action: “You have to create the future you want to see.”
How Far I’ll Go – A Twisted Tale by Keala Kendall
“What if Moana broke the heart of Te Fiti?” As all books in the Disney Twisted Tales series, this story takes a pivotal moment that went right in the movie, and asks what would happen if it went wrong. Moana has to save her home from the enveloping darkness, while fighting off a curse creeping up her arm. Luckily, she makes friends with Noe and the two work to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Focusing on the power of friendship and hope, this book is heartwarming despite the ways it twists away from the original Disney story.

This Place Kills Me by Mariko Tamaki, Illustrated by Nicole Goux
Abby, a new transfer student to Wilberton prep school, is the last person to see the popular Elizabeth Woodward alive before her questionable death. Chosen to play Juliet in the school’s upcoming rendition of Romeo and Juliet, Elizabeth’s death is ruled a suicide. Abby doesn’t believe it, and attempts to help solve the case. A moody color scheme lends itself to the mystery of this graphic novel.
